  • generates quality traffic to your site

  • helps you out rank your competition
  • builds your website’s Google ranking
  • gets your message and opinions across
  • sparks debate with your target audience
  • creates a need for your product and service

I learned to blog by trial and error, and I am still learning but here are some key things I think anyone serious about blogging should consider

1. Google favours dynamic content

It makes total sense that Google wants to make available the most relevant webpages in search results.  Google has a number of major algorithms that it uses to prioritise and rank search results in order to give the user the most relevant information.

Google will favour your content if it is relevant and fresh. So, this is why regularly publishing fresh content (blogging) on subjects that are relevant to your target audience is so very important if you want to be found on-line.

2. Choose the best blogging platform for you

There is a plethora of blogging solutions available to you.  Here are some of the popular methods for you to look at.

WordPress

WordPress has over 55,000 plug ins and 1000s of themes to change your blog look and feel.  It’s free to use, search engine friendly and works well with social media.

WordPress.org

WordPress.com is a hosted blog site.  It is very simple to set up – just create an account and follow the installation wizard.  The free account is very limited, however paid plans are inexpensive and start from £3 per month.

Blogger.com

This is a free blog hosting service acquired by Google in 2003, this means you can sign up easily with your existing Google account.  No skills are required to use it and it has built in SEO as it is optimised directly by Google.

Wix.com

Wix allows you to put together your web presence and add a blogging ability. It is subscription-based and offers different packages starting from around £10 per month.  Wix does not give too much flexibility as You are unable to move your site elsewhere and take your content with you

Ghost.org

Ghost is a subscription-based publishing platform focused only on blogging and prices start at $19 per month. Many say it’s not easy to customise and has limited configuration options.

Medium

Medium is a publishing platform created by one of the people behind Twitter. It is popular with writers, bloggers, and journalists as it’s full of writers with compelling ideas, stories and perspectives.   It is free to use, you simply sign up and start blogging.

3. Write blog content that is relevant to your target audience

Your content is king in blogging.  Before you start blogging you need to do a little research to find out what your audience is searching for on-line.

There are many tools available to help you do this, including some free tools like Google’s Keywords Planner.

These tools will help you identify the most popular keywords and phrases and order them for you by volume and competitiveness.

Once you informed of what is of current interest to your target audience you can then start to create relevant content that will be useful for your target audience (remember Google likes relevancy).  Choose subjects you know that will interest your audience, adopt a more conversational style and ensure you deliver a message that will in-directly spark an interest.

If your blog content is highly relevant, then it will have far greater chance of getting found by your intended audience.  And, if you blog high quality content frequently you will demonstrate to Google that your content is dynamic and relevant, which will help you steadily climb up the Google rankings and outrank your competitors.

4. Understand how to write for Google

You need to write your blog in a way that helps Google locate your content.  This will be vital to your blogging success.

To have the best possible chance of success you need to understand the major Google algorithms, especially Hummingbird, which focuses on interpreting search queries to deliver highly relevant search results.

So, if you are serious about using blogs to generate free organic traffic to your website then I recommend you learn how to adapt your blog writing style to meet the intent of this algorithm.  Or alternatively seek help from an experienced blog writer.
